My Favorite Natural Hair Detangler – 1 Ingredient + Budget Friendly!
For those of you who have coily hair or if your kids do you know how vital it is to keep it super moisturized. If not, it will become dry, brittle, and tangled. This makes it super important to try and stay on top of keeping it detangled.
But for those times when your hair does become tangled, it’s so critical to use a product that softens and makes it more manageable. I’ve recently rediscovered my love for the perfect natural hair detangler — olive oil.
Extra virgin olive oil is a product that’s become a staple for my family since I started including natural products in our everyday beauty care regimen. I used to use it often on our hair years ago, but recently, not so much. Not until about a week ago.
I was combing my daughter’s hair and wanted to use a product other than what I had been using previously. Something that would really help make her hair less resistant and easier to work with.
We used up our jar of Shea Moisture Jamaican Black Castor Oil Leave-In Conditioner. Creme of Nature with Argan Oil and Mane ‘n Tail were the only other conditioning products we had. I needed a moisturizer and didn’t want to use these at the time.
So, I grabbed the bottle of olive oil that I pretty much only use for skin care as of lately, and decided to give it a try.
I was wowed by how soft it made my daughter’s hair within a few short minutes! Seriously. Now it’s my go-to natural product I use after washing both of my kids’ hair. I had forgotten how great it is for softening and detangling.
Hands down, extra virgin olive oil worked better at loosening tangles from my daughters’ hair than the Shea Moisture Strengthen & Restore Leave-In Conditioner and other products.

Don’t get me wrong, the Shea Moisture Leave-In Conditioner does have nourishing benefits, but olive oil did a better job making their hair easier to comb through. At least in my own personal experience.
Within seconds of working it in, their hair becomes much softer and easier to comb through.
Quick Steps & Tips For Getting The Best Results
- Make sure your hair is freshly washed or clean first.
- Divide your hair into sections depending on the thickness of your hair.
- Dampen your hair or spray one section at a time with water.
- Take one section of hair and apply a small amount of olive oil (I just eyeball it).
- WAIT at least one minute for the olive oil the set in and soften your hair.
- Gently comb through your hair.
- Repeat steps 3 to 6 with each section of hair.
The other thing I love about using olive oil for our hair is that it’s affordable compared to many high-end natural hair care products. It only involves one ingredient — olive oil — so you don’t have to scan through an extensive list of ingredients to find out what’s in.
Choosing Good Quality Olive Oil
Always make sure you use a good quality extra virgin olive oil. Choose a dark glass bottle when possible. This will preserve the quality of the oil longer.
I used to assume that greener olive oil meant better quality, but I was wrong. A dark green color does not in any way mean the oil is superior to other oils of a lighter color.
Virgin olive oils come in a different range of colors due to the level of chlorophyll in the olives when they are pressed.
Wrapping It Up
These are the results of my personal experience using olive oil for hair.
If you’re looking for a natural product that creates soft, relaxed, and tangle-free hair, then maybe you should try using a good brand of Virgin Olive Oil too!
Have you tried olive oil to help detangle your hair? I’ll be happy to hear about your results! Share!
The best part of using olive oil is that you can apply it to bone dry har. Do not detangle wet, detangle after applying olive oil liberally to dry hair and let the hair absorb it. You will be able to divide your hair into sections. I put on a plastic treatment cap. I can feel my hair getting softer as my.own body heat is helping my hair and scalp absorb the oil. My hair feels nourished. I have to detangle dry, because trying to detangle after washing is
a lost cause. Then I can divide into sections and from my scalp and wash, condition, and style, from sections. I don’t feel overwhelmed or intimidated by my natural thick coily black hair
Hi Robin! I apologize for replying so late and thank you for taking the time to comment. Life has gotten a bit busy, but I will try to be active on this site on a consistent basis. It’s easier for me to comb our hair when it’s damp or wet even as I liberally moisturize, unless it’s already detangled. We experience a lot less shedding and breakage with this method. I’ve realized over the years some people find it easier to detangle dry hair and others find it easier to detangle wet hair. I agree, an oil treatment would be helpful. All my kids have thick coily black hair, which requires careful attention, but it’s no doubt luxurious and beautiful! Thanks again for sharing your hair tips and once again sorry for the late response!
